Every Christmas season the words of Away In a Manger always play loudly in my head. Why? Because it’s a significant point in our history.
From the very beginning of time God's prophets have prophesied of the birth of Jesus Christ. The prophet Isaiah said, "For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counselor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace." The Book of Mormon prophet, Samuel the Lamanite said, "And also that ye might know of the coming of Jesus Christ, the Son of God, The Father of heaven and of the earth, the Creator of all things from beginning; and that ye might know of the signs of his coming, to the intent that ye might believe on his name."
"And behold, there shall a new star arise, such a one as ye never have beheld; and this also shall be a sign unto you," (Helman 14:5). The star was a significant sign given by the Father to testify of the birth of His son. If you think through its meaning, you will correlate a star that no one had ever seen to a baby that was born as the literal son of God. Could anything be more significant than His birth? The bright light of the star correlates to the light of Jesus Christ that leads us to righteousness and teaches us all things. The star was led the Wise Men to the baby Jesus. This is the same for us; if we follow Him, He will lead us back to the Father.
God still teaches us through signs, if we pay attention, they will lead us to Christ. We are blessed with a living prophet, Thomas S. Monson, and fifteen prophets and apostles who provide counsel and teachings. If followed, their words will lead us to Christ and back to the Father. These prophets can keep us safe from the world and from harm's way.
Another sign is the Book of Mormon, which was written for us. If read and studied, the mistakes of the Nephites of old and will not be repeated and we will find peace and happiness by abiding its council. In the temple, signs and symbols teach us the true doctrine of the Father. When we search for the meaning of these signs and symbols the Holy Ghost deepens our testimony and knowledge.
I hope we will seek after and learn from the signs the Father gives us, that they will teach us His doctrine and lead us back to His presence.
May each of you find joy and peace this holiday season! We wish you a very Merry Christmas and wonderful New Year.
With great love and appreciation,
President Larry Gregson
